Welcome
A little about myself
My name is Lauren Caswell, a native of Atlanta, Georgia and the younger of two sisters. After receiving primary and secondary education in the public school system, I attended and graduated from Fort Valley State University (FVSU) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice in 2006. During my undergraduate years at FVSU, I was considering the possibility of going to Law School and becoming a juvenile public defense attorney. However, upon graduating, I realized that my heart was not in law. I was once told, “find your occu-PASSION and not just an occupation and you will never have to work a day in your life.” It took me a couple of years to figure out that my passion was to teach. My mother is a Spelman College graduate whose concentrations were English and Secondary Education. Finding these areas saturated in the job market, she was a preschool teacher in a private school for several years before becoming a director for a learning center. She would always tell me that I was going to be a teacher, just like she was. I guess to prove her wrong; I ran away from teaching and thought that I knew what I wanted to do. However, I soon learned that “mama is always right.” I started substituting for the Clayton County Public School System and while teaching, I attended Strayer University and earned a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership in 2010. My goal is to teach 3rd-5th grade for maybe 6-8 years, then move into the area of administration; eventually becoming a Principal or maybe even a Superintendent.
To get out of the big city for a while and see if I can truly make it on my own in a place where I didn’t know anybody and explore, I relocated to Savannah a little over a year ago. I was able to get a job at Strayer University, Savannah Campus, as a Campus Coordinator and I really enjoy my job. Interacting with students, encouraging them to begin or continue their education, being a helping hand…it’s truly a rewarding experience. Although I have passed the GACE content areas I and II for Early Childhood Education, I have yet to obtain the certification that would qualify me to actually teach, other than at the substitute level. At one point in my life, I got discouraged and allowed myself to get deterred by what I thought were failures. I now realize that I was being set up for something much greater; something so great that every time I think about it, I get chills. When it comes to teaching in a classroom - educating thousands of children; inspiring them to be something more than they could ever dream - there is only one thing standing in my way of and that is getting my certification. I live very close to Armstrong State University and I have to drive pass it quite often in travel to do errands. One day I was led to look into the school academic programs and discovered that Armstrong offered a Post-Secondary Master’s degree for Initial Certification in Education for people who hold a Bachelors in another field. I was so overwhelmed with joy and called the school right away. I was informed that classes started around the second week of June and it was already the first week of May. However, I did what I had to do and got accepted about two weeks from the start of class.
I expect this course to further enhance my knowledge and preparedness for becoming an educator as well as help mold my founding principles and philosophies. I am excited to be on this journey with all of you and I wish you all the best of luck. Remember to keeping pushing! You never know how close you are to your break through!
