Oral Comprehension
Below are two oral assessments, each followed by a brief description.
The authors of this assessment (see reference) did not specifically mention which grade level this type of assessment would be appropriate for, however, throughout the site it does mention first, second, and third grade. It may be appropriate for fourth and fifth grade as well. This informal/formative assessment measures comprehension elements such as story grammar, details, inferences, predictions, if the student is able to make a connection in some form, and whether the student can identify the fictional genre. Students should be given at least 5 minutes to complete the oral assessment and questions or prompts should be given to the individual student rather than whole group. This assessment also allows the teacher to make note of the student's reading level. It is very important to understand if the student is at an independent, instructional, or frustrational level so that the most appropriate assistance is given.

This informal diagnostic reading assessment is appropriate for students in grades second and third. It should be given to students individually and students should be allowed between five to eight minutes to answer all the questions. The assessment measures if the student is able to retell and comprehend what they have read. The teacher may want to add a question such as if the student could relate to the story in some way (if applicable). As the title of the assessment states, this assessment does not allow the opportunity for students to go back and refer to the text for the answers.
