This informal/formative assessment was created by Lauren Caswell, M.Ed. This assessment measures if the student understands onset-rime and has the ability to blend the first sound in the word (onset) and the rest of the word (rime).should be given to pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten grade levels. Children who are in first grade and are reading below grade level can also be given this assessment. Students should be assessed three times throughout the year. As the directions suggest, teachers should monitor progress from the beginning of the year, to the middle of the year, and at the end of the school year. Students should be given at least 5 seconds to answer correctly, before indicating that the child does not know the answer. Lastly. this test should be administered to the individual student.

There are so many resources such as the one I found on Kidszone.com (see reference) that will allow you to assess your students on word family knowledge. These assessments are appropriate for Kindergarten an 1st grade students. Students should be given the assessment individually and instead of one-on-one with the teacher, the teacher should utilize folder partitions to keep wandering eyes to a minimum. In addition, these assessments can be given multiple times throughout the week as, again, there are several word families that students can be assessed on. These informal/formative can be fun for the students, but you as the teacher can monitor progress as well. Students should be given 1 to 2 minutes to complete this assessment.
