Silent Reading
Below you will find two silent reading assessments, each followed by a brief description.
This silent reading assessment would be appropriate who are in the first, second, or third grade levels. The assessment is based on teacher observation and the teacher should monitor the student individually. This is a formative assessment that should be administered three times throughout the year. Suggestively at the beginning of the year, the middle, and towards the end of the school term. The teacher should monitor the student for at least three minutes and mark off what she observes with a check mark. The assessment targets tasks such as if the student runs their finger under each line as they read, if they hold the book too far or too closely, and if the student reads too slowly or too quickly. There is also space for the teacher to make comments such as "Sarah is squinting her eyes when reading." or "John runs his finger under the line from right to left." Comments can be very helpful when communicating with parents. Perhaps Sarah is squinting because she may need corrective glasses, etc.

This informal/formative assessment is mainly appropriate for first and second graders who are becoming independent readers, specifically dealing with silent reading and staying on task. The assessment is in the form of observation by the teacher and has three simple categories: Shining star, star, and falling star. It measures how well a student performs the task of whispering when reading, reading to themselves without bothering their peers. making sure to stay in their designated spot, handling one book at a time, and taking care of the book that is in their possession. Teachers should observe students individually for at least three minutes to see if students are performing the "shining star" tasks.
