This informal/formative assessment was found on The Teacher's Guide (see reference) and is designed for 1st graders. It measures if students know the right spelling of specific word. The student must be able to read the incomplete sentence and then choose the correctly spelled word to fill in the blank. Teachers can easily create something similar to assess high frequency sight words. Students should be given approximately 5 minutes to complete. If you would like to administer this to your class, I suggest placing this on the Promethean board and call on a student to come up to circle the correct answer. The test could also be administered individually.

Made by Joel (see reference) created this assessment that measures students ability to not only recognize the picture but to spell the what the picture represents. Another awesome way to measure your student's spelling ability. This formative/informal assessment should be given to Kindergartners and 1st graders on an individual basis. Students should be given between 5-8 minutes to complete.
