This assessment is provided by Lakeshore Learning (see reference) and can be used for Pre-K and Kindergarten, and perhaps in the very beginning of the year for 1st graders to assess prior knowledge. The assessment covers if a student recognizes each letter of the alphabet and if the student is able to write the letter as well. Students are recorded with the following key: Check mark indicating correctly answered, WR for wrong answer, DK for didn’t know, and NR for no response. The assessment also features an alphabet chart for the teacher to use with the student. Given the nature of the response-key system, this test should be administered on an individual basis. This test should also be considered a formal/summative test for Pre-k/k and an informal/formative assessment for 1st graders. The assessment should be completed within 10 – 15 minutes.
